Skilled Migrant & Skilled Residence Visas

New Zealand offers pathways for skilled workers to gain residence through the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) and related Skilled Residence Visas. These visas are designed for applicants whose skills are in demand, allowing them to live and work in New Zealand permanently.

Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)

  • The updated SMC focuses on skilled employment and streamlines eligibility : No cap on the number of applicants.
  • Skilled job offer required from an accredited employer. Median wages apply based on occupation level.
  • 6 Points-based system: Earn points for qualifications, occupational registration, income, and New Zealand work experience.
  • Standard requirements: Age under 55, English proficiency, health and character clearance.

Skilled Residence Visas

  • Separate from the SMC, these visas are employment-based and may include partners and dependent children under 24. There are four main types:
  • Straight to Residence – For Tier 1 Green List occupations with permanent or fixed-term employment of at least 12 months.
  • Work to Residence – For Tier 2 Green List roles; requires 24 months of eligible employment before applying for residence.
  • Highly Paid Residence – For roles earning at least twice the median wage for 24 months with accredited employment.
  • Care Workforce Work to Residence – For care sector roles; requires 2 years’ experience at Level 4 pay or higher.
  • These pathways are ideal for skilled workers ready to contribute to New Zealand’s workforce, while offering a clear route to permanent residence.
